Spheron - SPHERON-CGI

Since 2006 a student project group under the direction of Michael Jostmeier, professor for CG design and photography at the German University of Applied Science, works upon the potential of photorealistic visualization. Jostmeier about their motivation: “CGI, Computer-generated Imagery, is not about putting photography into question, but about the possibility to upgrade the photographic procedure, to create images of the imagination.”

The making-of above gives a brief insight into the practice oriented work of the Ohm-project. The so far accomplished projects show that with CGI the integrated use of technical tools – camera, image processing and 3D programs – is mandatory. “But first of all”, Jostmeier emphases, “CGI demands knowledge in the handling of light. As in the traditional photography, within virtual presentation consistency of surface and material, sharpness gradient, light and reflection play a decisive role. SPHERON-VR technology perfectly supports us in all these aspects.”

The Georg-Simon-Ohm University with its approximately 8.500 students is one of Germany’s greatest universities. Its faculty Design conveys fundamentals from the creative, conceptual and technical area of design as well as basics of communication theory, social studies and cultural history. Computer Generated Imaging is one of the modules of the bachelor study program. The nine others are concept, movie & animation, photography, graphic design, illustration, interactive design, font, typography and verbal communications.
