Sony Pictures Imageworks use Spheron Cameras in latest VFX Productions

Spheron-VR, known globally as pioneers in HDR (High Dynamic Range) camera technology and experts in precision engineered equipment & imaging optics, are today pleased to reveal that its customer Sony Pictures Imageworks (SPI) the Academy Award® winning visual effects and animation company, have successfully utilized their Spheron HDR Cameras in their latest VFX productions, including – Men in Black 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man .

SPI’s Chief Technology Officer, Rob Bredow, explains how their Spheron cameras continue to be a powerful tool in their production resources during the making of these movies. ‘’The cameras ability to automatically capture lighting environments and to record 3D data whilst onset is unique. Our Spheron’s are reliable and cope with harsh on-set conditions.  We leverage the wide dynamic range and high resolution photography heavily in our lighting pipeline,’’ says Bredow.

The SpheroCam HDR is able to capture 360º spherical images in a single scan. With 26 f stops of exposure and clarity of up to 50 mega-pixels, the SpheroCam HDR provides the optimum image quality for 3D image rendering. The camera is also excellent at recording spatial data, using its 3D immersive measurement technology; it enables CG objects to be placed into any location - bridging the gap between the real world and computer graphics environments.

SPI captures both HDR light fields as well as making use of the cameras photogrammetric technology.  Such 3d spatial data is enhanced and adapted further into the SPI’s internal workflow, by the development of a unique Spheron IBL feature. This results in an entirely flexible HDR lighting rig which allows for lights to be manipulated and controlled within an actual 3D environment during post-production.

The combined technologies of Spheron & SPI’s IBL control features are integrated into SPI’s own look-development and lighting tool, known as Katana.

‘’Spheron is proud and honored to have such a respected customer as Sony Pictures Imageworks,” said Peter Taylor of Spheron VR, “their work producing some of the most exceptional film imagery and animation, see them as true leaders in both the art and science of movie making. Spheron wishes to congratulate SPI as they celebrate this year their 20th Anniversary.”
